After a long day dealing with makeup, pollution, oil and the weather, your skin will have been exposed to a variety of harsh environments, and will be desperate for some care and attention. Research has shown that new skin cells grow faster at night while we are asleep, making a good night time skin care routine absolutely essential. Here are some of our top tips on how to best care for your skin at night.
Removing Makeup
If you wear makeup during the day, the first step to a good night time skin care routine is to wash it all off. If you don’t, your makeup will grind into your skin throughout the night, causing breakouts and clogging and stretching out your pores, causing your skin to age much faster. OROGOLD recommends using a makeup remover that is oil-based, as this will even remove waterproof mascara without pulling at the skin too much.
Thorough Facial Cleansing
Each night, you should be using a quality facial cleanser to thorough cleanse your face, helping to remove any dirt or residue that has gotten caught up within your skin. Use warm water, as this better penetrates the pores, releasing any bacteria. If you have sensitive skin, use a fragrance-free product, while those of you who have a blackhead problem are best doing a light exfoliation at this stage as well.
Vitamin A/Topical Retinoid
Once your skin has been cleansed, OROGOLD recommends gently patting it dry and then applying a retinoid. As we age, the production of collagen in our skin decreases, causing our skin to wrinkle and sag. Vitamin A, applied topically, helps to stimulate collagen production, and it also helps to lighten any dark spots.
Eye Cream
Since the skin around the eyes is much thinner compared to the skin on the rest of the body, an eye cream is essential to prevent premature signs of aging. There are no oil glands around the eyes, so this area can also get extremely dry. OROGOLD suggests using an eye cream that contains Vitamin A, C, E or K, as this will help to reduce puffiness, hydrate the skin, and lighten dark circles.
Moisturizer
The last step in a night time skin care routine is to apply a thick moisturizer over your face, neck and chest. Search for a moisturizer that contains antioxidants, peptides, and vitamins, as this will help to repair the damage that your face has gone through during the day. The moisturizer that you use at night should be thicker and heavier than your day moisturizer, ensuring that it will fully hydrate and rejuvenate your skin while you sleep.
Since everybody has a different skin type, your specific night time skin care routine needs to be tailored to your own needs. It only takes a few minutes to give your skin the care that it needs at night, and this will not only help your skin to maintain a youthful appearance, but will also keep it smooth, soft, clear and healthy the next day.
