Dry and flaky skin can be extremely uncomfortable, and while aging and genetics do play a part in your skin type, dry skin is usually caused by external factors, resulting in the outer layer of the skin losing its ability to lock in moisture. However, with a few simple adjustments to your daily skin care routine, you will be able to transform your dry skin into skin that is smooth and supple, which is why OROGOLD has put together some useful tips to help you to care for dry and flaky skin.

Woman taking a hot bath

Avoid Hot Showers and Baths
Hot water strips the skin of its natural oil barrier, and it is this barrier that is crucial for trapping in moisture and protecting the skin. Rather than using hot water, OROGOLD recommends opting for a temperature that is as cool as you can handle. You should also be avoiding long baths, and limiting your time in the shower to between five and ten minutes.

Moisturize Immediately After Washing
After you have used water on your skin, whether it be from a shower or just from washing your hands, it is important to remember to never let this water naturally evaporate, as this will only make your skin drier. Instead, OROGOLD would suggest patting your skin dry with a soft towel for no more than 20 seconds, before applying a gentle moisturizer to the area of skin that had come into contact with the water.

Use Effective Products
Most skin care products will be tailored to a specific skin type, so it is important to only use ones that are designed to counter dry skin. The moisturizer that you use should be packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory ingredients, and ingredients that can help your skin to retain moisture. It goes without saying that you should also be avoiding products that contain drying ingredients. For flaky skin, OROGOLD would suggest looking into pure plant oils, such as olive oil or jojoba seed oil, and apply this to the driest areas of your skin immediately after your moisturizer.

Daily Sunscreen
As OROGOLD mentioned earlier, dry skin is usually due to the skin’s natural barrier being damaged. Even if you use the best products, and try to take great care of your skin, this will all be for nothing if you aren’t protecting your skin from further damage from the sun. Daily sunscreen is absolutely necessary, as any more sun damage will only make your skin even less capable of retaining moisture.

Now that the summer is over and the dry days of winter are almost upon us, dry and flaky skin is much more likely to become a problem. While you may not be spending much time in the sun, daily sunscreen is still necessary, as the damaging rays from the sun can still penetrate through thick clouds, as well as glass. If you have followed all of OROGOLD’s tips and are still suffering from dry, flaky skin, feel free to pop into your nearest OROGOLD store to see which of our products may be able to help you.
